Your Gmail contacts and your Mailchimp list, in line

MailchimpGmail
The short answer

There is no built-in Mailchimp and Gmail integration: Mailchimp's integrations directory doesn't list Gmail. To connect them, you export your Google contacts to a CSV file and import it into Mailchimp, then add a Zapier zap to add new people from Gmail to a Mailchimp audience. You can type a Gmail address as your sender in Mailchimp, but Mailchimp may change it so your email still gets delivered. Where it stops: imports can overwrite good data, unsubscribes don't cross between the two, and replies to campaigns land in Gmail with no one assigned. AI agents keep the list current and sort those replies.

What a Mailchimp and Gmail integration has to do

Most small businesses talk to customers one at a time in Gmail and send news to everyone in Mailchimp. The people who matter most, the ones who emailed to ask a question or place an order, often never make it onto the list. And the ones who asked to stop getting email can still get one from the other side.

So connected has to mean three things. People who agreed to hear from you get onto the right Mailchimp audience without someone copying them over. Anyone who unsubscribes stays off both. And replies to your campaigns reach someone who answers them. None of the ways below does all three on its own.

Four ways to connect Gmail with Mailchimp

Many teams use the first two together.

Export from Google Contacts, import to Mailchimp

How it works
Export your contacts from Google Contacts as a Google CSV file. In Mailchimp, go to Audience, then Add contacts, then Import contacts, and upload the file. You match each column to a field and set everyone's email marketing status.
Good for
A one-time start, or a list you clean up once a quarter.
Where it breaks
Mailchimp's import guide says that with Update any existing contacts checked, blank cells erase the values already there. It skips people who unsubscribed or bounced, but only within the same audience. Contacts you import as subscribed skip the signup step, so you have to be sure they agreed.

A Zapier zap

How it works
Zapier has Gmail triggers like New Email Matching Search and New Labeled Email, and Mailchimp actions like Add/Update Subscriber and Add Subscriber to Tag. The other way, Mailchimp's New Subscriber trigger can start a Gmail Send Email step.
Good for
Adding people as they come in, like anyone you label as a new customer in Gmail.
Where it breaks
In Zapier's community, a post from October 2025 says each repeat signup through a zap overwrote names that had been fixed by hand with blank or partial data. It had no replies. Each case is a zap you build and watch.

Send Mailchimp campaigns from your Gmail address

How it works
You can enter a Gmail address as the From address in Mailchimp. Replies go to that Gmail inbox.
Good for
A very small business that has no email on its own website yet.
Where it breaks
Mailchimp says free addresses like Gmail can't be verified as a sending domain. When a free domain could cause delivery problems, Mailchimp changes the From address to one on its own mailchimpapp.com domain, and says this "can't fix all delivery issues." It recommends an address on your own domain.

Gmail's mail merge instead

How it works
On some Google Workspace plans, Gmail has its own mail merge. You click Use mail merge in a new email, add people or link a sheet, and Gmail sends each one a personal copy with an unsubscribe link.
Good for
Short personal sends to a few hundred people, where a Mailchimp campaign would feel like too much.
Where it breaks
Google caps it at 1,500 recipients a day. Unsubscribes apply only to mail merge, and Google says you can't get a full list of who unsubscribed, so they never reach Mailchimp.

Arkeo agents

How it works
Agents read your Gmail and your Mailchimp audience. They add people who agreed to hear from you to the right audience with the right tags, without wiping fields someone fixed, check that no one who unsubscribed in Mailchimp gets a Gmail send, and sort replies to campaigns to the person who should answer.
Good for
Businesses where the list and the inbox are kept by different people and drift apart.
Where it breaks
Anything your rules keep for a person, like a reply to an unhappy customer, goes to the owner in one message.

How to connect Mailchimp to Gmail

These follow Google's, Mailchimp's and Zapier's own pages. Open them for the screens.

  1. 1

    Export your Google contacts

Open Google Contacts and check the box next to the contacts you want. To get them all, check any box, open Selection Actions and select All. Then open More actions, click Export, select Google CSV and click Export.

  2. 2

    Import them into Mailchimp

In Mailchimp, click Audience, open Add contacts and select Import contacts. Click Upload a file, add your CSV, add tags if you want, match each column to a field, and set the status. Then click Finalize import and Complete Import. Import as subscribed only the people who agreed to get your email.

  3. 3

    Send from your own domain

Use an address on your own website's domain as the From address in Mailchimp, not a gmail.com address, and authenticate that domain. Replies can still go to an inbox you read in Gmail.

  4. 4

Add new people with a zap

In Zapier, start with a Gmail trigger like New Labeled Email, and add a Mailchimp Add/Update Subscriber step. Map the sender's email from the Gmail step, not a fixed address, and add a tag so you can see who came in this way.

  5. 5

Check Google's rules for bulk email

If you send more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail addresses, Google requires SPF, DKIM and DMARC on your domain and a one-click unsubscribe. Keep spam complaints low in Postmaster Tools.

  6. 6

    Test with your own address

Label a test email in Gmail and check the contact shows up in Mailchimp once, with its tag. Then send yourself a test campaign and reply to it.

What still has to be done by hand

There is nothing to switch on. Mailchimp's integrations directory lists Shopify, Square, Stripe, Salesforce and hundreds more, but not Gmail. So each person who should be on your list either gets typed in, comes over in a CSV file, or goes through a zap someone built.

Imports can undo good work. Mailchimp's import guide says that when you update existing contacts, blank cells in your file erase what's already there. It also says Mailchimp can't spot duplicates, bounces or unsubscribes across different audiences. A Zapier community post from October 2025 describes the same problem with a zap: each new signup wiped names that had been corrected by hand.

Unsubscribes don't travel. Someone who unsubscribes in Mailchimp can still get a Gmail mail merge, and Google says mail merge unsubscribes apply only to mail merge, with no full list to export. A business that uses both has to check by hand before it sends.

A Gmail sender address has limits. Mailchimp says it can't verify free domains and may swap in its own sending domain, and Google's sender guidelines tell bulk senders not to pose as Gmail in the From line.

And replies pile up. Answers to a campaign land in the Gmail inbox you set for replies, mixed in with everything else, with no one assigned to them.
