The short answer

To connect Mailchimp to Shopify, you have three options. The main Shopify integration with Mailchimp is Mailchimp's own app, listed in the Shopify App Store as Mailchimp Email SMS Marketing, made by Intuit Mailchimp. It sends your customers, orders and shopper activity to Mailchimp. You can also use a Zapier zap for single jobs, or import your customers as a file. Where they stop: one store links to one audience, opt-in status can come across wrong, and old cart reminders have to be rebuilt. None of them check that the right people got the right email, or tell you which emails brought orders. AI agents do that part.

What a Shopify integration with Mailchimp has to do

Your customers buy on Shopify. Your emails go out from Mailchimp. When the two don't talk, someone downloads a customer list now and then, new buyers miss the welcome email, and a shopper who left a full cart never hears from you.

So "connected" has to mean three things. Each new buyer who said yes to email lands in the right Mailchimp audience, with tags that say what they bought. A shopper who leaves a cart gets a reminder on time. And you can see which emails brought people back to buy.

Three ways to connect Mailchimp and Shopify

One is Mailchimp's own Shopify app, one uses Zapier, and one is a file you upload.

Mailchimp's Shopify app (Mailchimp for Shopify)

How it works
You install Mailchimp Email SMS Marketing from the Shopify App Store and log in to Mailchimp. Mailchimp's help calls it Mailchimp for Shopify. It adds each customer's email, name and order details to one Mailchimp audience. It also shares shopper actions, like viewing a product, adding to cart and starting checkout, so you can start automations from them. Opens and clicks go back to Shopify.
Good for
Most stores. The App Store lists a free plan, and Mailchimp's help says all fields except discount codes come across in real time.
Where it breaks
It links one store to one audience. Mailchimp says to pause welcome automations before you connect and to rebuild abandoned cart ones after. Low-star reviews keep naming the same things: new subscribers that don't come across, opt-in status that doesn't match Shopify, and contact counts that raise the bill.

A Zapier zap

How it works
Zapier has ready templates, like Add new Shopify customers to Mailchimp, Add/update Mailchimp subscribers for new paid orders in Shopify, and Create new Shopify customers from new subscribers in Mailchimp segments or tags. Each zap runs when its trigger happens.
Good for
One extra step the app doesn't do the way you want, like adding paid buyers of one product to a second list.
Where it breaks
Zapier marks Shopify as a Premium app. Each zap is one trigger and one action, so tags, several lists and email results are each more zaps to build and watch.

A file import

How it works
You put the Shopify customers you want in a spreadsheet with an Email Address column, save it as a CSV file, and use Import contacts in Mailchimp to upload it.
Good for
A one-time move, or a small store that sends a few emails a year.
Where it breaks
It is out of date the next time someone buys. Mailchimp imports one status at a time, like subscribed or unsubscribed, and you need permission to email the people you mark as subscribed. Nothing about carts or orders comes with it.

Arkeo agents

How it works
Agents read new orders, customers and abandoned checkouts in Shopify. They check each buyer who said yes is in the right Mailchimp audience with tags for what they bought, and start the reminder for a cart left behind. After each email, they read its opens, clicks and unsubscribes, line them up with the orders that came in, and send your team the results.
Good for
Stores where email should bring buyers back, and nobody has the hours to check lists and reports.
Where it breaks
Anything your rules keep for a person, like a big order with a refund on it or a customer who asked to stop all mail, goes to your team in one message.

How to connect Mailchimp to Shopify with the app: five steps

Mailchimp's own help has the full screens, linked under each step. You need manager access or higher in Mailchimp.

Where the Shopify Mailchimp integration stops

Opt-in status can come across wrong. Mailchimp's help says a contact already opted in to marketing in Mailchimp is marked subscribed in Shopify after the first sync, whatever Shopify said before. Low-star reviews in the Shopify App Store describe the other side too: buyers who said yes at checkout showing as not subscribed, and new subscribers who never reach Mailchimp. Someone still compares the two lists by hand.

Not everything is real time, and some shoppers aren't shared. Mailchimp says discount codes sync a few hours behind, and reviewers say promo codes don't update. Mailchimp also says shopper events are limited if your store has GDPR or CCPA rules on, so cart reminders can reach fewer people than you expect.

Setup leaves work behind. Old abandoned cart automations must be rebuilt, welcome emails paused and copied, and Shopify order notices turned off so buyers don't get two. Mailchimp prices by contacts, and several reviewers say their contact count went up after connecting.

The app rates 4.8 out of 5 from 1,530 reviews, so most stores are happy with it. About 9% of reviews are one or two stars, and they repeat the complaints above.

Questions

Is my customers' information safe?

Yes. Agents work in your own Shopify and Mailchimp and see only what their job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.

Does Mailchimp still work with Shopify?

Yes. Mailchimp's app is in the Shopify App Store as Mailchimp Email SMS Marketing, made by Intuit Mailchimp, with a free plan listed. If you are still on the older Mailchimp for Shopify [Legacy], Mailchimp's help has steps to switch to the current app.

Can Mailchimp send abandoned cart emails from Shopify?

Yes. The app shares cart and checkout actions from Shopify, and you start abandoned cart automations from them in Mailchimp. If you had abandoned cart automations before you connected, Mailchimp says to rebuild them.

Do Mailchimp contacts go into Shopify too?

They can. Mailchimp's help says you can turn on Create New Customers in the app's Settings tab, so new contacts in your Mailchimp audience are added as customers in Shopify.

What does it cost?

You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
