Sheet rows in Slack, and Slack requests in your sheet

Google SheetsSlack
The short answer

You have three options for a Google Sheet Slack integration. Slack's Workflow Builder has Google Sheets steps that add rows to a sheet or pull data back into Slack, on paid plans. The Google Drive app for Slack shares sheets and tells you about comments. Zapier can post a Slack message when a row changes. Where it stops: Workflow Builder writes to the next empty row in UTC time, and Zapier can miss changes when someone sorts or deletes rows. None of them read the numbers and say what changed. AI agents do that, and post it where your team works.

What a Google Sheet Slack integration has to do

A lot of teams run on a sheet: the order list, the job board, the weekly numbers. And they talk in Slack. So people keep copying numbers from the sheet into messages, and requests from Slack into the sheet.

A good connection works both ways. When something in the sheet changes, the right channel hears about it. When someone asks for something in Slack, it lands as a new row. And someone still has to say what matters.

Three ways to connect Google Sheets and Slack

Slack builds the first two. The third is an app you add.

Slack Workflow Builder with Google Sheets steps

How it works
In Workflow Builder, you add the Google Sheets step called Add a spreadsheet row. For example, a form in Slack can add each request to your sheet as a new row. Slack says its Google Sheets steps can also pull data from a sheet into Slack.
Good for
Requests, sign-ups and reports that start in Slack and need to land in a sheet.
Where it breaks
Paid Slack plans only. It writes only to an empty row below the last formatted cell, and dates go in at UTC+0, which you can't change. A sheet with no column names won't load, and people get error notices when the sheet's sharing is too tight.

The Google Drive app for Slack

How it works
One person adds the Google Drive app from the Slack Marketplace, and each member connects their Google account. Then you can make or share a spreadsheet from any conversation, and the app tells you about comments, access requests and shares.
Good for
Teams who share sheets in Slack and want comments to show up there.
Where it breaks
It works with the file, not the rows in it. It won't post a message when a number changes or add a row from a Slack message.

A Zapier zap

How it works
Zapier's ready-made zaps send a Slack message when a row is updated, add Slack messages to a sheet, or send scheduled Slack messages with numbers from a sheet.
Good for
Simple alerts, like a message each time a new row is added.
Where it breaks
Zapier's help pages say its sheet triggers can miss rows after someone deletes rows, sorts, renames the sheet, or adds rows anywhere but the bottom, and the updated-row trigger won't fire for a value it has seen before. Some triggers check only every 15 minutes on the Free plan.

Arkeo agents

How it works
Agents read the cells, tabs and formulas in the sheets you give them, work out what changed and what needs a person, and post one clear message in the right Slack channel. When your team asks for something in Slack, agents add the row or update the cells.
Good for
Teams who run on sheets and want the important changes in Slack, not a message for each edit.
Where it breaks
Anything your rules keep for a person, like an approval or a number that looks wrong, goes to the owner in one message.

How to connect Google Sheets to Slack with Workflow Builder

You need a paid Slack plan. Slack's pages have the full screens, linked under each step.

  1. 1

    Get the sheet ready

Give the sheet a header row with one column for each detail you want. Leave the rows below it empty and unformatted.

  2. 2

    Add the Google Sheets step

Open a workflow in Workflow Builder and add the step called Add a spreadsheet row. If you don't see it, ask a Slack owner or admin.

  3. 3

Connect Google and set the sheet

Click Connect and sign in to Google. Then set the spreadsheet and the tab, match each column to a detail from the workflow, and click Save.

  4. 4

Decide whose Google account it uses

By default the step uses your account. You can set it so people use their own, but then each one needs access to the sheet.

  5. 5

Add the Google Drive app for sharing

Add Google Drive from the Slack Marketplace. Each member then connects their own Google account from the app's Home tab.

Where the Google Sheets Slack integration stops

Slack's own step writes to a sheet; it doesn't watch one. Add a spreadsheet row puts data in the first empty row below the last formatted cell, so rows can land lower than you expect, and its dates are in UTC+0. Nothing in Workflow Builder posts to a channel when a number in the sheet changes.

Zapier watches the sheet, but it keeps track of rows by their number. Its help page says that deleting rows, sorting, renaming the sheet or adding rows in the middle can make a zap miss data, and the fix is to turn the zap off, make the change, and test it again. Its updated-row trigger also won't fire when a cell goes back to a value it has seen before. Zapier's community forum has many threads from people whose sheet zaps stopped firing.

Sharing gets in the way too. Slack's troubleshooting page says people using a workflow get error notices when they can't open the sheet. So someone still opens the sheet each morning, works out what changed, and types it into Slack by hand.

Each agent does one job from start to finish, working from your Google files and posting in your Slack.

Questions

Is my customers' information safe?

Yes. Agents work in your own Google Sheets and Slack and see only what their job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.

Does Slack have a Google Sheets integration?

Yes. Workflow Builder has Google Sheets steps that add rows to a sheet or pull data from a sheet into Slack, on paid plans. The Google Drive app for Slack also lets you share sheets and get notices about them.

Can I get a Slack message when a Google Sheet is updated?

Not with Workflow Builder's Add a spreadsheet row step, which writes to a sheet. Zapier has a ready-made zap that sends Slack messages when rows are updated.

Can I connect Google Sheets to Slack on the free plan?

Slack lists its Google Sheets steps for Workflow Builder on paid plans only. Zapier's page for this pair says it has a free tier.

What does it cost?

You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
