Airtable has its own Slack Airtable integration, in three parts. Base notifications post to a Slack channel when a base, a record or a view changes. Slack actions in Airtable automations send a custom message, or one with buttons so someone can approve from Slack. And the Airtable app for Slack lets your team ask about a base or add a record by mentioning Airtable. Where it stops: requests that start in a Slack thread don't become records unless someone types them in, buttons expire after 7 days and count only the first answer, and when a message fails, someone has to find it in the run history and send it again. AI agents do that checking and tell your team what needs a person.
Why a Slack Airtable integration matters
Airtable is where many teams keep the list: projects, orders, hires, requests. Slack is where the team talks about that list. Without a link, people check the base for changes by hand, and decisions made in a Slack thread never make it back to the record.
So connecting Slack and Airtable has to work both ways. A change in the base should reach the right people in Slack, at the right time. And a request or a yes in Slack should land on the right record, without someone copying it across later.
Four ways to connect Slack and Airtable
The first three are built by Airtable. The fourth is a zap you build yourself.
Airtable base notifications in Slack
- How it works
- You set a rule that posts to a Slack channel when anything changes in a base, in some records, or in one view. You can make as many rules as you need, so each base posts to its own channel.
- Good for
- Teams that want a simple feed of changes, like new applicants in #recruiting or new bugs in #dev.
- Where it breaks
- Airtable says a view rule doesn't fire when a record enters the view on its own, like a filter tied to a date, and changes to hidden fields don't post. Only the person who made a rule can edit it or turn it off.
Slack actions in Airtable automations
- How it works
- In an automation, you add Slack: Send a message for a custom note, or Slack: Send an actionable message for one with buttons. A button can approve a request or update a record straight from Slack.
- Good for
- Approvals and hand-offs, like a manager approving time off or a lead marking a project ready.
- Where it breaks
- Airtable says actionable messages expire after 7 days, only the first person's answer counts, and only people with Editor access or higher can use the buttons. A direct message can go to 10 people at most, and more than 20 messages a minute can get held back by Slack.
The Airtable app for Slack
- How it works
- A Slack workspace admin installs the Airtable app. Then your team can mention Airtable in a channel to ask about a base, sum up records, or create and update entries. Airtable links pasted into Slack show a preview of the record.
- Good for
- Quick lookups and one-off updates, by people who don't want to open the base.
- Where it breaks
- It acts only when someone asks it to. A request typed in a thread without mentioning Airtable stays in Slack, and each person only sees what their own Airtable access allows.
A Zapier zap from Slack to Airtable
- How it works
- Zapier's templates create Airtable records from new Slack channel messages, from messages with a set emoji reaction, or from a message you push with Zapier's shortcut.
- Good for
- Teams that log requests in one Slack channel and want each one as a record.
- Where it breaks
- Each zap is one trigger and its steps. The whole message lands in one record, so someone still sorts out the name, the date and the status by hand.
Arkeo agents
- How it works
- Agents read the requests and answers in your Slack channels, add or update the right Airtable record, check the base for records missing a field or past due, and post what changed in Slack.
- Good for
- Teams of 10 to 50 where work is asked for in Slack, tracked in Airtable, and nobody has the hours to keep the two matched.
- Where it breaks
- Anything your rules keep for a person, like a large approval, goes to them in Slack with the record it came from.
How to set up the Airtable Slack integration
These follow Airtable's own help articles. Open them for the screens.
- 1
Get a Slack admin to allow itAsk a Slack workspace admin to install the Airtable app, and check your Airtable admin hasn't turned off the Slack integration. You need access to the base on the Airtable side.
- 2
Add a base notification ruleOpen the base, click the arrow next to the base name, then the three dots, then Slack notifications. Set the base and the channel, select Allow if asked, and send a test message.
- 3
Build an automation for custom messagesIn the base, click Automations, then Create automation, and add a trigger like When record enters view. Click Add advanced logic or action, go to Integrations, then Slack, and add Send a message or Send an actionable message. Connect your Slack account and set who gets it.
- 4
Add the Airtable bot to private channelsIf messages don't show up, Airtable says your Slack admin may need to add the Airtable app as a member of that channel.
- 5
Send Slack requests into AirtableFor Slack to Airtable, start from Zapier's template that creates an Airtable record from each new message in one channel. Keep that channel for requests only.
- 6
Check the run history each week
Open each automation's run history and look for failed runs. Retry any that failed, and write down who owns each notification rule.
What still has to be done by hand
Most of the Airtable Slack integration runs one way: from the base out to Slack. The work that starts in Slack is the part left over. A manager says yes in a thread, a client asks for a change in a shared channel, a teammate posts that an order shipped. Unless someone mentions the Airtable app or a zap catches that exact channel, the record never changes, and someone copies it in later from memory.
Messages also fail without much noise. During a long Slack outage in February 2025, Airtable's status page said automations sending Slack messages had used up their retries and failed. Airtable emailed owners and told them to check the run history and retry by hand. In Airtable's community, one team's Slack automation had worked for two years, then started failing with an error that it could not find the Slack person for an email, after a change on the Slack side. The fix offered was to disconnect and reconnect. In another thread from 2023, a few people said Airtable wouldn't connect to their company's Slack at all, while personal workspaces worked.
Then there is who owns what. Only the person who made a base notification rule can change it or turn it off. When that person leaves, Airtable's own advice is to work out which base the posts come from and ask the rest of the team to check their rules.
The agents that do it
Each agent does one job from start to finish in your own Airtable and Slack, and tells the right person what needs them.
A base your team can trust.
- Finds duplicate and blank recordsevery day
- Fixes what your rules allowsame day
- Sends the rest to the record ownerright away
Know where the work stands without building the report.
- Counts records by status and ownerevery Monday
- Compares it to last weekevery Monday
- Sends it to your teamMonday morning
Questions
Is my customers' information safe?
Yes. Agents work in your own Slack and Airtable and see only what their job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.
Does Airtable integrate with Slack?
Yes. Airtable's own Slack integration posts base changes to channels, sends custom messages and approval buttons from automations, and lets your team ask about bases or add records by mentioning Airtable in Slack.
Why aren't my Airtable messages showing up in Slack?
Airtable says your Slack admins may block the Airtable bot from a channel. Ask an admin to add the Airtable app to that channel. If it still fails, check the automation's run history for the error and reconnect your Slack account.
Can Slack messages create Airtable records?
Yes, in two ways. Mention the Airtable app in Slack and ask it to add a record, or use a Zapier zap that creates a record from each new message in a channel.
What does it cost?
You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
