The main Twilio Airtable integration is built into Airtable: an automation action called Twilio: Send SMS, which texts a person when something happens in your base. Zapier can do more, like add each text you get on your Twilio number to a table. Where they stop: Airtable's action only sends, so replies never come back to the record; each text goes to one number; and nothing tells you if a text failed. AI agents send the texts, put each reply on the right record, and tell your team who still needs an answer.
What a Twilio Airtable integration has to do
Airtable holds your list: clients, jobs, bookings, orders, people to call back. Twilio is the phone number that sends and gets the texts. With no link, someone copies a phone number out of Airtable, types the text, and later types the reply back into a notes field. On a busy day, some of those replies never make it back.
So a real Twilio Airtable integration does two jobs. It sends the right text when a record changes, like a form coming in or a job being marked done. And it brings the reply back to that same record, so anyone who opens it can see what was said and what happens next.
Three ways to connect Twilio and Airtable
One is built into Airtable. One is a zap. One is code you or a developer writes.
Airtable's Twilio: Send SMS action
- How it works
- An action inside Airtable automations. You set a trigger, like a new record or a form sent in, then add Twilio: Send SMS and fill in Body, To and From. You can pull in fields from the record, add an image by link, and give a Status callback URL. Airtable lists it on all plans, with limits that vary by plan.
- Good for
- Sending one text per record: a confirmation, a reminder, an alert to the person on call.
- Where it breaks
- It only sends. Airtable support told users in its forum that the app doesn't take incoming texts, and that it can't log what was sent. Each text goes to one number, so a list needs a loop, and Airtable's repeat step stops at 100 records.
A Zapier zap
- How it works
- Zapier's Twilio triggers include New SMS and New Call. Its Airtable actions include Create Record, Update Record and Find Record. One zap can add each text that reaches your Twilio number as a new row; another can send a text from a new Airtable record.
- Good for
- Getting replies into Airtable without code, and logging calls next to texts.
- Where it breaks
- Each zap is one trigger and its steps. A new row for each text is easy; finding the right client's record by phone number, and saving the reply there, is more steps you build and keep up. Numbers saved in different formats won't match.
A script or your own code
- How it works
- Airtable automations have a Run script action, and Airtable's forum often points people to it to call Twilio and save the result. Twilio's own blog shows how to log each incoming text to Airtable with a small web app.
- Good for
- Teams with a developer who want texts and replies kept on each record their own way.
- Where it breaks
- Someone has to write it, host it and fix it when Twilio or Airtable changes. When it breaks, the texts stop and nobody gets a message saying so.
Arkeo agents
- How it works
- Agents send the texts from your Twilio number when a record changes, read each reply, put it on the right record, update the status field, and send your team the replies that need a person.
- Good for
- Teams that run their bookings, jobs or follow-ups out of Airtable and text people every day.
- Where it breaks
- Anything your rules keep for a person, like a complaint or a question the agent can't answer from your records, goes to your team in one message.
How to set up Twilio: Send SMS in Airtable
These follow Airtable's own guide for the action. Open it for the screens.
- 1
Get your Twilio number readyIf you text US numbers from a regular 10-digit number, register it for A2P 10DLC in Twilio first. Twilio says unregistered texts get more carrier filtering and extra carrier fees.
- 2
Make the automationOpen your base and click Automations, then + Create new and + Create automation. Click + Add trigger and set what starts it, like a new record or a form sent in.
- 3
Add Twilio: Send SMS and connect your accountClick + Add advanced logic or action and select Twilio: Send SMS. The first time, you need the Account SID and Auth Token from your Twilio Console home page.
- 4
Fill in Body, To and From, then testPut the phone number field from the record in To, not a list of records. Click Run test on each step, then switch the automation from OFF to ON.
- 5
Bring replies back with a zapIn Zapier, use Twilio's New SMS trigger and Airtable's Find Record and Update Record, so each reply lands on the record with that phone number.
Where the Twilio Airtable integration stops
Airtable's action sends a text. The rest of the conversation is left to your team. In Airtable's forum, a user who wanted texts and replies on each student record said Airtable support told them the app doesn't take incoming messages, and pointed them to the API or a tool like Zapier. Another user who wanted to log each text sent was told by forum experts that the app can't do it without a script.
It sends to one number at a time. In a 2023 thread, a user's texts to a list failed because the To field got a list of records, not phone numbers. The answer: Twilio takes one number per text, so you need a loop, and Airtable's repeat step handles at most 100 records.
It counts failed texts too. Airtable's limits page says each time a trigger fires is one run, failed or not. The Free plan gets 100 runs a month for the whole workspace.
And a failed text is easy to miss. In one 2023 thread, Airtable staff said a failing action came from instability in the integration, and the user saw nothing in Twilio's error log. Unless someone checks the run history, the client just never hears from you. Then the reply comes in, and someone has to find the record and type it in by hand.
The agents that do it
Each agent does one job from start to finish in your own Airtable and Twilio. Your team gets the replies that need a person.

Questions
Is my customers' information safe?
Yes. Agents work in your own Airtable and Twilio and see only what their job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.
Can Airtable send text messages?
Yes, through Twilio. Airtable's Twilio: Send SMS action sends a text from your Twilio number when an automation's trigger fires. You need your own Twilio account to connect it.
Can Airtable receive texts from Twilio?
Not with the built-in action, which only sends. To get replies into a table, use Zapier's Twilio New SMS trigger with an Airtable action, or a script or small app that a developer writes.
What does it cost?
You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
