Monday.com boards and Excel sheets that agree

Monday.comExcel
The short answer

There is no live monday.com Excel integration built into either program. monday lets you import an Excel file into a new or existing board, and export a board, group or set of items to Excel. For anything that keeps going, you set up a Zapier zap between monday.com and Excel files on OneDrive for Business, or a Power Automate flow. Where it stops: an export is a copy that goes stale the moment the board changes, an import can add duplicates unless you set it to skip or update matches, and nothing checks that the sheet and the board still agree next week. AI agents do that part.

What a monday.com Excel integration has to do

At accounting firms and consulting firms, the work is planned on a board, but the report a client or owner opens is a spreadsheet.

The board lives in Monday.com. Someone exports it each Friday, cleans it up and sends it on.

The numbers, the client report or the budget live in Excel, because that's what the finance lead, the client or the owner opens.

So connected has to mean more than a file you downloaded once. The sheet should show what the board shows today. Changes made in the sheet should either come back to the board or be flagged. And somebody should notice when the two drift apart, before a client reads last week's status.

Ways to connect Monday.com and Excel

The first two are built into monday. The others keep things moving after the first copy.

monday's Export to Excel

How it works
From a board's three-dot menu, you click More actions, then Export board to Excel. You can include updates and subitems, export only what matches a filter, or export one group or a few items. The file downloads right away, and a copy can go to your email.
Good for
A one-time copy for a client, a report or a printout.
Where it breaks
monday's guide says only table views export, group by, sort and color don't come across, and you can't change how the file is laid out. Subitem updates are left out. On Enterprise, admins can turn exports off for everyone else.

monday's Import from Excel

How it works
You can make a new board from a spreadsheet through Import Data, or add rows to an existing board with Import items. You match each Excel column to a board column, then say what to do with rows that match an item already there: add them all, skip matches or update matches.
Good for
Moving a sheet into monday once, or pushing a batch of changes back onto a board.
Where it breaks
Add all rows as new items makes a new item for each row, even when it is already on the board, so a second import makes duplicates unless someone selects Skip matches or Update matches. Only some column types map, dates must be in year-month-day form, and files are capped at 8,000 rows.

A Zapier zap

How it works
Zapier's monday.com triggers include New Item in Board and Specific Column Value Changed. They can add or update a row in an Excel sheet, and Excel's New Row and Updated Row can create or update monday items.
Good for
A running log, like adding a row to a sheet each time an item is made or marked done.
Where it breaks
Zapier says it only works with Excel files on OneDrive for Business. Each column is a field you map and keep, and finding the right row to update is a step you build yourself.

Power Automate

How it works
Microsoft lists a monday.com connector, published by monday.com, for Power Automate. It is a Premium connector, and an admin first installs monday's Microsoft integration in your account.
Good for
Companies already on Microsoft 365 that build flows in Power Automate.
Where it breaks
It is built for AI assistants to work with boards, not as a ready made sheet sync. Microsoft lists a limit of 100 calls a minute for each connection, and the flow is yours to build and watch.

Arkeo agents

How it works
Agents read your boards each day, update the rows in your Excel tracker or report from your template, and check that the sheet and the board still agree. When someone changes a number in the sheet, they update the board or ask the owner.
Good for
Teams that plan in monday and report in Excel, and spend Fridays copying between them.
Where it breaks
Anything your rules keep for a person, like a budget line that moved a lot, goes to the owner in one message.

How to connect monday.com and Excel: the steps

These follow monday's own guides for export and import. Open them for the screens.

  1. 1

    Filter the board first

Set the filter you want in the file, like one client or one owner, and save it if you'll use it again. monday's export only includes items that match the current filter.

  2. 2

    Export the board to Excel

Click the three-dot menu at the top right of the board, then More actions and Export board to Excel. Say whether to include updates and subitems, then click Export.

  3. 3

Import changes back with Import items

On the board, click the arrow next to New item and select Import items. Upload the Excel file and match each column to a board column, or set it to Don't import column.

  4. 4

Set what happens to matching rows

At the step for matching items, select Update matches or Skip matches and the column that counts as a match, like email or a job number. Use Add all rows as new items only if all the rows are new.

  5. 5

Add a zap if it has to keep going

For a sheet that updates on its own, connect monday.com and Excel in Zapier, with the workbook saved on OneDrive for Business. Start from New Item in Board and Add Row, then add the update steps you need.

What still has to be done by hand

Import and export move a copy. Keeping two copies matched is the work in the middle, and it stays with a person.

An export goes stale right away. It is a snapshot of the board at the moment you clicked. A community post on monday's forum asks for a direct, automatic sync between a board and a cloud Excel file and says import and export by hand is the only way today. Another request asks for scheduled Excel exports, since monday already schedules PDF exports. It is still marked Gathering Feedback.

The file doesn't look like the board. monday's guide says board views, grouping, sorting and colors don't export, you can't change the layout, and subitem updates are left out. So someone rebuilds the client's version each time.

Imports can make duplicates. Add all rows as new items makes a new item for each row unless someone selects Skip matches or Update matches and a match column. Dates must be in year-month-day form, only some column types map, and files past the row limits are refused.

And a zap only does what it was told. It needs the file on OneDrive for Business, and each column is a field someone maps. When a column is renamed in the board or the sheet, nothing tells you the rows stopped filling in. Much the same happens when people try to connect Excel to Google Sheets.

The agents that do it

Each agent does one job from start to finish, in your own Monday.com and Excel. Your team talks to them in Slack or Teams.

Questions

Is my customers' information safe?

Yes. Agents work in your own Monday.com and Excel and see only what their job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.

Can monday.com sync with Excel automatically?

Not on its own. monday's own tools are a one-time export to Excel and an import from Excel. For a sheet that updates by itself, people use Zapier with Excel files on OneDrive for Business, or a Power Automate flow.

Why does my Excel import make duplicate items?

With Add all rows as new items, monday's import makes a new item for each row, even ones already on the board. Select Update matches or Skip matches and the column that counts as a match, like email, so rows that are already on the board are updated or left out.

Can I export a monday dashboard to Excel?

monday's export guide covers boards, groups and items, and says only table views export. Board views, grouping, sorting and colors don't come across. Teams that also keep files in SharePoint often ask the same about monday.com and SharePoint.

What does it cost?

You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
