The main Slack integration for Jira is Atlassian's free Jira Cloud app. It sends Jira updates to people and channels, and lets your team make and change work items from a chat. A Jira automation rule or a Zapier zap can also post messages. Where it stops: some updates never reach Slack, automation rules stop when the month's allowance runs out, and nothing chases a ticket that has sat for a week. AI agents do that part: they watch the tickets, message the owner, and tell your lead what is late.
Why a Slack integration with Jira matters
Your team talks in Slack. The work lives in Jira. With no link between them, a bug gets reported in a thread and never makes it into Jira, or someone opens Jira to answer a question and types the answer back by hand.
So a good connection does two things. It gets work from the chat into Jira when it comes up. And it brings the right Jira updates back to the right people, so a ticket that stops moving gets noticed before it's late.
Three ways to connect Jira and Slack
Two come from Atlassian, and one from Zapier.
The Jira Cloud app for Slack
- How it works
- Atlassian's own free app. You add it to Slack and log in to Atlassian. Then you can make and assign work items in plain words, turn a message into a work item, get your own Jira notices, and send a space's updates to a channel.
- Good for
- Teams that want Jira news where they already talk.
- Where it breaks
- Your Jira site admin has to turn it on first. Atlassian says no Slack notice goes out for work items with security limits, or when all the comments are private. Its bug list has an open report of notices that sometimes don't arrive for new work items. It never follows up on a ticket that sits still.
Jira automation with Send Slack message
- How it works
- You make an incoming webhook in Slack for a channel and paste its address into the Send Slack message action. Then a rule you build, like a work item moving to Blocked, posts to that channel or to one person.
- Good for
- One clear rule for one channel, like telling the support lead about each high priority bug.
- Where it breaks
- Each run uses steps from a monthly allowance; Jira Free gets 150 for the whole site. When it runs out and extra usage is off, rules stop until the month resets. If only Slack admins can add apps, an admin has to make the webhook.
Zapier
- How it works
- Zapier has ready-made zaps for the two. The most used one makes a Jira issue from each new message in a Slack channel.
- Good for
- Small teams with one simple path, from a chat message to a ticket or back.
- Where it breaks
- Zapier's page says its Jira and Slack triggers check every 15 minutes on the Free plan. Each zap is one rule in one direction, so many rules means many zaps to watch.
Arkeo agents
- How it works
- Agents read your Jira tickets, owners and due dates every day. They nudge the owner of a ticket that hasn't moved, tell your team lead in Slack what is late, tell support when a fix ships, and write a weekly status.
- Good for
- Teams where tickets slip because nobody has the time to chase them.
- Where it breaks
- Anything your rules keep for a person, like a change of priority or closing a ticket, goes to your team in one message.
How to set up the Jira Cloud app in Slack
Atlassian's pages have the full screens, linked under each step.
- 1
Ask your Jira admin firstYour Jira site admin has to turn on the Slack integration before anyone can connect.
- 2
Add the app to SlackInstall Jira Cloud from the Slack Marketplace and log in to Atlassian when it asks. The app then sends you a direct message.
- 3
Set up your own noticesType /jira notify to set which updates you get about your own work items.
- 4
Send a space's updates to a channel
In the channel, type /jira connect and follow the prompts. For a private channel, invite @Jira first. Type /jira manage to change it later.
- 5
Test it with one ticket
Turn one Slack message into a work item from its action menu. Check it shows up in Jira with the right space and owner.
Where the Jira Slack integration stops
Some updates never reach Slack. Atlassian's guide says no Slack notice is sent for work items with security limits. Its help center says that when all the comments on a work item are private, no Slack notice goes out either. And Atlassian's public bug list has an open report, filed in September 2025, that people sometimes don't get a Slack notice when a new work item is given to them. It lists no workaround.
Rules can stop on their own. Each run of a Jira automation rule uses steps from a monthly allowance, and a run that doesn't match still counts. Jira Free gets 150 steps a month for the whole site. Atlassian says that when the allowance runs out and extra usage is off, rules stop until the month resets. The channel just goes quiet.
Public reviews are thin. The app has 48 reviews on the Atlassian Marketplace, averaging 3.1 out of 5, and only a few have written comments, the newest from 2024. So the work in the middle looks the same in most teams: someone reads the channel, works out which tickets have stopped moving, and chases each owner by hand.
The agents that do it
Each agent does one job from start to finish in your own Jira, and talks to your team in Slack.
Nothing sits for weeks without someone noticing.
- Checks open tickets for no updateevery day
- Nudges the owner with a commentright away
- Tells your team lead what is still lateevery day
Customers hear back the day it's fixed.
- Watches for linked tickets marked doneas they close
- Finds the customers who reported itper ticket
- Tells support, and drafts the replysame day
Everyone knows where work stands without a status meeting.
- Pulls what closed, what's open and what's lateevery Monday
- Writes it in plain words for the whole teamevery Monday
- Sends it to Slack and NotionMonday morning
Questions
Is my customers' information safe?
Yes. Agents work in your own Jira and Slack and see only what their job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.
Can I make a Jira ticket from a Slack message?
Yes. With the Jira Cloud app, open the message's action menu to turn it into a work item, or type /jira create to open a form.
Why can't I connect Jira to Slack?
Your Jira site admin may need to turn on the Slack integration first. For a private channel, invite @Jira to the channel before you set it up.
Why didn't a Jira update show up in Slack?
Atlassian says no Slack notice is sent for work items with security limits, or when all the comments are private. If it came from an automation rule, check whether your site used up its monthly allowance.
What does it cost?
You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
