The main Help Scout Slack integration is Help Scout's own app for Slack. It posts alerts to Slack channels when a conversation is created, updated, replied to or closed, and it can tag the person who owns it. Zapier and Make are the other ways. Where it stops: alerts go one way, so you can't answer a customer or change a conversation from Slack, only conversations with an owner tag anyone, and nothing reads a conversation to decide who should see it. AI agents do that sorting, and chase the conversations that have waited too long.
Why a Help Scout Slack integration matters
Your support team answers customers in Help Scout. Everyone else talks in Slack. When a customer asks something only sales, billing or a developer can answer, someone copies the conversation into Slack, waits for a reply, and copies the answer back.
It happens each time a support question is really a bug or a billing question. So "connected" has to mean two things. The conversations that matter reach the right people in Slack, with enough detail to act. And what people say in Slack makes it back into Help Scout, so the history stays in one place.
Three ways to connect Help Scout and Slack
Most teams start with Help Scout's own app.
Help Scout's Slack app
- How it works
- You set it up from Help Scout's own settings, and it works on all current paid plans: Standard, Plus and Pro. In the newer version, called Slack Beta in Help Scout, you build notification rules. Each rule sends one inbox's events, with optional filters, to a Slack channel. It can post updates as a thread under the first alert, show a preview when someone shares a conversation link, and tag the person assigned. It can also post each new Beacon chat, or each chat message.
- Good for
- Teams that want alerts in Slack for new conversations, customer replies and chats, sent to a different channel for each inbox.
- Where it breaks
- Help Scout says it is one way: you can't create or manage a conversation from Slack. One Help Scout account links to one Slack workspace. A tag only goes out when the conversation has an owner and that person is matched to their Slack name.
A Zapier zap
- How it works
- Zapier can start a zap when a Help Scout conversation is created, assigned or has its tags changed. It can send a Slack message, or go the other way: Zapier has a ready-made zap that makes a Help Scout conversation from each new message in a Slack channel. It can also add a note or send a reply in Help Scout.
- Good for
- Small teams with one rule Help Scout's app doesn't have, like a direct message to the owner, or a Slack channel that feeds an inbox.
- Where it breaks
- Each case is a step someone builds and looks after. Zapier says adding custom fields to a new conversation needs Help Scout's Plus plan. A zap moves fields; it doesn't read the message and judge it.
A Make scenario
- How it works
- Make's Watch Conversations trigger fires on Help Scout events like customer replies, agent replies, assignments, status changes and tag changes. It also has Watch Satisfaction Rating. Make's Slack actions include Send a Message.
- Good for
- Teams that want alerts on events the Help Scout app doesn't cover, like a bad rating.
- Where it breaks
- Same as Zapier: each path is built and kept by your team, and Make doesn't decide which conversations matter. If the scenario stops, nobody in support is told.
Arkeo agents
- How it works
- Agents read each new conversation in Help Scout, tag it, give it to the right person, and post the urgent ones to the right Slack channel. They check open conversations every hour and nudge the owner when a customer has waited too long.
- Good for
- Teams that get more conversations than they can sort by hand.
- Where it breaks
- Anything your rules keep for a person, like a refund or an angry customer, goes to your support lead in one Slack message.
How to set up the Help Scout Slack integration
These follow Help Scout's own guide for the newer Slack app. Open it for the screens.
- 1
Check your plan and your roleYou need a paid Help Scout plan. Account Owners, Administrators and users with the Access API permission can install the app.
- 2
Install the appIn Help Scout, click the gear icon for Settings, then Apps, then Slack Beta, and click Install App. If Slack asks, sign in again and click Allow.
- 3
Set threads, previews and mentions
Turn on Thread conversations to keep each conversation's updates under one Slack message, and Unfurl conversations for previews. To tag people, turn on Enable Global mentions and match each Help Scout user to their Slack name.
- 4
Build a rule for each channelOpen the Notifications tab and click New. Set the inbox, the event, any filters, and the Slack channel. One inbox can have many rules, and many rules can post to the same channel.
- 5
Remove the old app once the rules work
If you used the older app, called Slack in Settings, Apps, keep it until your new rules post the right alerts. Then click Uninstall App on the old one.
Where the Help Scout Slack integration stops
What's said in Slack stays in Slack. Help Scout says its app only sends alerts from Help Scout to Slack, and you can't create or manage a conversation from Slack. When a developer answers under an alert, someone on support copies that answer into a note or a reply in Help Scout. A help desk comparison updated this year says the same: nobody can reply, change a status or make a conversation from the alert. Zapier offers a ready-made zap that sends Slack messages into Help Scout, for teams that need that path and are willing to build it themselves.
Alerts follow rules, not meaning. A rule posts what matches its inbox, event and filters. An angry customer and a routine one look the same in the channel. And the tag only reaches a person when the conversation has an owner who is matched to a Slack name, so a new conversation nobody owns yet tags nobody.
Alerts also need something to happen. A customer who has waited two days with no reply makes no event, so nothing posts. Someone still opens Help Scout to find the ones going quiet. Help Scout links one Slack workspace per account, and teams moving to the new app have to rebuild their alerts as rules before they remove the old one. For accounts with a HIPAA agreement, Help Scout leaves conversation details out of the alerts, so people click through to see what each one is about.

Questions
Is my customers' information safe?
Yes. Agents work in your own Help Scout and Slack and see only what their job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.
Can I reply to a Help Scout customer from Slack?
Not with Help Scout's own app. Help Scout says it sends alerts one way, from Help Scout to Slack. Zapier has a Send Reply action for Help Scout, but someone has to build and look after that zap. Slack automation covers what else Slack can and can't do on its own.
Which Help Scout plans have the Slack integration?
Help Scout lists it for all current paid plans: Standard, Plus and Pro. The Free plan isn't on that list.
Can I send different inboxes to different Slack channels?
Yes. In the newer app you build a rule for each inbox and event, and set the channel for each one. If you also use Zendesk, its Slack app works differently.
What does it cost?
You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
