The Attentive Klaviyo integration is installed from Attentive's Marketplace with a Klaviyo private API key. It sends email subscribers from Attentive's sign-up units to a Klaviyo list, keeps email opt-outs in agreement between the two, and brings your Klaviyo segments into Attentive for texts. Zapier can carry what it doesn't. Where it stops: phone numbers don't go to Klaviyo unless Attentive turns that on, opt-outs from Klaviyo can take up to 8 hours to reach Attentive, Klaviyo segments in Attentive refresh once a day, and nobody checks that the two lists still agree. AI agents do that checking.
Why connect Attentive and Klaviyo
Many online stores send texts from Attentive and email from Klaviyo. That means two lists of the same customers. A shopper signs up on an Attentive form, and Klaviyo needs their email address. A shopper unsubscribes from a Klaviyo email, and Attentive needs to stop emailing them too.
So an Attentive Klaviyo integration has to keep three things right: who is subscribed to what, which details each program knows about a shopper, and which shoppers belong in each campaign. If any of those drift, you send to the wrong people, or miss the right ones.
Three ways to connect Attentive to Klaviyo
The first two are parts of the same Attentive integration. The third is Zapier.
Attentive's Klaviyo integration
- How it works
- You make a private API key in Klaviyo with full access, then install Klaviyo from Attentive's Marketplace and paste it in. Email addresses from your Attentive sign-up units go to the Klaviyo list you set, with a source detail so you know where they came from. Optional settings send each sign-up unit to its own list, pass custom details and coupon codes, and keep email opt-outs in agreement.
- Good for
- Stores that collect sign-ups with Attentive and send email from Klaviyo.
- Where it breaks
- Attentive says phone numbers only go to Klaviyo if you ask your Attentive CSM or support. Coupon codes go from Attentive to Klaviyo, never back. Opt-outs from Klaviyo reach Attentive at least every 8 hours, not right away, and opt-in sync for international email isn't supported.
Klaviyo segments and email activity in Attentive
- How it works
- Once the integration is in, you paste the web address of a Klaviyo segment into Attentive's Create Segments setting, and it shows up in Attentive's segment builder as a Third-party segment. Attentive also lets you build text segments from Klaviyo email activity, like Received an email or Opened an email, and from Klaviyo details like city and zip code.
- Good for
- Texting shoppers based on what they did with your email, like a text to people who got a Klaviyo email but didn't open it.
- Where it breaks
- Attentive says a new segment appears after 24 hours, longer for segments over 100K contacts, then refreshes once a day, with no way to refresh it by hand. Email activity only goes back 90 days from the day the integration was turned on.
Zapier
- How it works
- A Zap starts on an Attentive trigger, like SMS Subscribed, Email Unsubscribed or Custom Attribute Set, and runs a Klaviyo action, like Create Or Update Profile, Subscribe Profile or Add Profile to List. It can also go the other way, from Klaviyo's New Profile or Profile added to Segment or List into Attentive's Subscribe User or Custom Attributes.
- Good for
- Moving one detail the built-in integration doesn't, in the direction you need.
- Where it breaks
- Each Zap copies only the fields you map, one event at a time. A phone number that arrives in Klaviyo this way is not consent to text, so Klaviyo won't send to it unless the consent is set too.
Arkeo agents
- How it works
- Agents compare who is subscribed in Attentive and in Klaviyo each day, fix the details that don't match, make sure a shopper who opted out in one program is opted out in the other, and send your team a short list of what they changed and what needs a person.
- Good for
- Stores with both programs where someone now exports lists to find the shoppers who are subscribed in one and not the other.
- Where it breaks
- Anything your rules keep for a person, like opting a shopper back in, goes to them first.
How to connect Attentive to Klaviyo
Six steps, in our words. Attentive's guides have the full screens.
- 1
Make a private API key in KlaviyoIn your Klaviyo account, create a new private API key. When it asks for the key's scope, select Full Access Key.
- 2
Install Klaviyo in AttentiveIn Attentive, go to Marketplace and click Klaviyo, then Install. Paste the private API key, click Save and continue, set the Klaviyo list for new subscribers, then click Save and continue and Save changes.
- 3
Add the tracking detail to your Klaviyo linksAdd klaviyo_id as a link tracking parameter on the links in your Klaviyo emails. Attentive says this helps it know your email subscribers when they visit your site.
- 4
Set the optional settings you needOn the Settings tab of the Klaviyo integration, under Optional settings: Sign-up unit list management sends each sign-up unit to its own list, Pass additional attributes to Klaviyo sends custom details, and Sync additional data to Klaviyo sends coupon codes.
- 5
Keep email opt-outs in agreementUnder Optional settings, click Sync email lists from Klaviyo, check it, add the Klaviyo lists to keep in agreement and click Save changes. Attentive turns this on by itself if you send email from both programs.
- 6
Bring a Klaviyo segment into AttentiveIn Klaviyo, open the segment under Lists & Segments and copy its web address. In Attentive, open the Klaviyo integration, click Create Segments, then + Add segment, paste the address and click Add segment. It appears under Third-party segments after about 24 hours.
Where the Attentive Klaviyo integration stops
The integration does what Attentive's guide says. The work left is in what it doesn't carry, and in the hours when the two programs disagree.
It mostly runs one way. It was built to send email sign-ups from Attentive into Klaviyo. Attentive's guide says phone numbers only go to Klaviyo if you ask your Attentive CSM or support, and that coupon codes can't go from Klaviyo back to Attentive. In a Klaviyo community thread, stores that collect sign-ups in Klaviyo were told there was no built-in route to send them to Attentive without custom work. That thread is from 2022, so check it against Attentive's guide today.
Opt-outs move on two clocks. Attentive says opt-ins and opt-outs from Attentive to Klaviyo happen right away, but opt-outs from Klaviyo to Attentive happen at least every 8 hours. A shopper who unsubscribes from a Klaviyo email in the morning can still get an Attentive email that afternoon. If Klaviyo suppresses a shopper, Attentive opts them out too, and opting them back in needs Attentive's support team.
Segments are up to a day old. A Klaviyo segment in Attentive refreshes once every 24 hours, and you can't refresh it by hand. A text sent from that segment can reach shoppers who already left it in Klaviyo.
Text consent doesn't travel with a phone number. Klaviyo's help says Attentive doesn't let you export your text subscribers yourself; your Attentive account rep sends the file. Klaviyo only texts a number when its consent status is set, so numbers copied over without it can't be used.
And nobody checks that the two lists agree. Each program reports on its own list. Finding the shoppers who are subscribed in one and not the other still means two exports and an afternoon in a spreadsheet.
The agents that do it
Each agent does one job from start to finish, in your own Attentive and Klaviyo: it keeps subscriber details right, makes sure opt-outs are honored in both programs, and keeps your lists clean. Your team talks to them in Slack or Teams.
