n8n is built for builders. Here is what else there is.

The short answer

The main n8n alternatives are Zapier, Make, Activepieces and Microsoft Power Automate. Zapier and Make need no code and run in their own cloud, so there is no server to look after. Activepieces is open source like n8n. Power Automate fits a business on Microsoft 365. Each one still leaves the upkeep to you: when an app login expires or a step keeps failing, the workflow stops until someone fixes it. If you'd rather not build at all, agents can do whole jobs for you, set up and looked after by us.

Why people look for an n8n alternative

n8n calls itself the platform for agents and workflows you can follow. It has 500+ built-in integrations, reaches any app with an API, takes your own code, and has a free Community Edition you can host yourself.

n8n is clear about who hosting is for. Its docs say hosting it yourself needs technical skill to install and set up, that you provide and manage the servers, and that upkeep is your job. So most people looking for an n8n alternative either have no technical person, or don't want to build workflows at all.

First, the n8n alternative inside n8n

If hosting is the only problem, look at n8n Cloud before you switch. n8n's docs say it needs no installation and no technical skill. But you still build each workflow and fix it when an app changes.

The best n8n alternatives

Each one described the way its own site describes it.

Zapier

How it works
Zapier calls itself no-code automation across 9,000+ apps. You build Zaps: when something happens in one app, do something in another.
Good for
Owners who want the most app connections and no code. No server, and a free plan.
Where it breaks
Zapier turns a Zap off if it fails 95% of the time over more than 20 runs in a week. On the free plan, it checks your apps for new data every 15 minutes.

Make

How it works
Make lets you build and manage AI agents and automations in one visual landscape, by drag and drop or by typing a prompt. It connects to 3,500+ apps and runs in Make's own cloud.
Good for
People who like n8n's visual canvas but don't want to host anything. It has a free plan with no card.
Where it breaks
By default, Make turns a scenario off after 3 errors in a row. It stays off until someone finds the cause and turns it back on.

Activepieces

How it works
Activepieces puts chat, agents, flows, tables and 770+ apps in one workspace. Its pieces are MIT-licensed open source. Use its cloud in Frankfurt, or host it with Docker.
Good for
Teams who want open source like n8n, with a builder its site says people who aren't developers can use.
Where it breaks
Hosting it yourself still means a server to keep up and release changes to apply. Forum posts describe flows that stopped until someone signed in to the app again.

Power Automate

How it works
Microsoft calls Power Automate an end-to-end automation solution built for enterprise. It has more than 1,000 connectors, works inside Microsoft 365 and Teams, and lets you describe a flow to Copilot.
Good for
A business that already runs on Microsoft 365.
Where it breaks
Microsoft turns off a flow that keeps failing for 14 days, and a flow slows down when the person who owns it leaves the company.

Arkeo agents

How it works
Nothing to build or host. We set up agents that each do one whole job inside your own software, like keeping your CRM right or getting invoices out, and we keep them working when apps change.
Good for
An owner with no technical person who wants the work done.
Where it breaks
Anything your rules keep for a person, like a large refund or a lead it can't place, goes to your team in one message.

What n8n and its alternatives leave for you to do

Switching builders moves the work to a new screen. The work after setup stays with you. n8n's own docs list it.

Updates. n8n asks self-hosters to update at least once a month and to read each release for changes that break workflows. Version 2.0, for example, removed the old Start node and changed what a workflow gets back from a sub-workflow, so older workflows had to be checked.

Alerts. n8n doesn't warn you by default when a workflow fails. Its docs show how to build a separate error workflow that sends you an email or a Slack message.

App logins. n8n's Google page says that if your Google app is left in testing mode, logins expire after seven days and must be reconnected. Several threads in its forum ask why a Google connection keeps needing to be signed in again.

The alternatives have their own version of this. Zapier and Make turn a workflow off after repeated errors, and someone has to find out why.

If nobody on your team builds workflows

That is the gap agents fill. An agent does one whole job, like following up with each new lead or getting the week's invoices out in QuickBooks. It follows your rules, checks its own work, and tells a person when a case needs one. We set it up with you and look after it.

If you have n8n workflows that work, keep them. Bring them to the call, and we'll go through which jobs an agent should take.

Agents that do the jobs people build in n8n

Each one does a whole job inside your software, and your team talks to them in Slack or Teams.

Questions

Is my customers' information safe?

Yes. Agents work in your own accounts and see only what each job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.

What is the best n8n alternative for someone who isn't technical?

Zapier and Make both need no code and run in their own cloud. Activepieces says people who aren't developers can build with it. If you don't want to build at all, have agents do the job for you.

Is there an open source n8n alternative?

Yes. Activepieces is open source, and you can host it yourself with Docker.

Can I use n8n without hosting it?

Yes. n8n Cloud is hosted by n8n, and its docs say it needs no installation and no technical skill. You still build and look after the workflows yourself.

What does it cost?

You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
