How to connect Stripe to Shopify depends on where your business is. In the countries where Shopify Payments works, like the US, Canada, the UK and Australia, you can't add your own Stripe account. Shopify's help says Stripe won't be available to activate there, because Stripe already works behind Shopify Payments. You turn on Shopify Payments instead. Where Shopify Payments isn't offered, you can add Stripe as a third-party provider from the Payments page. Where it stops: if you also sell through your own Stripe account, your sales, payouts, refunds and customers sit in two places, and someone still adds them up by hand. AI agents pull both into one report each week and flag what doesn't match.
Can you connect Stripe to Shopify?
Most people who search for how to connect Stripe to Shopify already have a Stripe account. They bill subscriptions, take deposits or sell on another site through Stripe, and now they want a Shopify store to use the same account. In most countries, Shopify doesn't allow that. Its own help page says that if Shopify Payments is supported where your business is located, Stripe won't be available for you to activate.
So for most stores, connected can't mean one Stripe account behind both. It has to mean something else: one view of what you sold in both places, what you refunded, what each one charged in fees, and what reached the bank. Shopify and Stripe each show their own half. Nobody shows the whole.
Four ways to connect Stripe and Shopify
Which one you can use depends on your country and what you sell.
Shopify Payments
- How it works
- Shopify's own way to take cards, with Stripe working behind it. You turn it on from Settings, then Payments, in your Shopify admin. Payments, fees and payouts show in your Shopify admin, not in a Stripe dashboard.
- Good for
- Stores based in a country Shopify Payments supports. For most stores in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia, this is the only card option that works with Stripe.
- Where it breaks
- It is not your Stripe account. A Shopify staff reply in its community says you can't use your own Stripe account, and that sales through two checkouts show in two separate admins. Payout currencies are set by country: one merchant in Sweden could only use a bank account in SEK or EUR, not USD.
Stripe as a third-party provider
- How it works
- Only where Shopify Payments isn't supported. In Settings, then Payments, you add a provider in the Payment providers section, find Stripe, sign in to your Stripe account, then click Activate and Save.
- Good for
- Businesses based in a country where Shopify Payments isn't offered and Stripe is.
- Where it breaks
- Shopify says third-party transaction fees apply to all sales through third-party providers. Only the store owner can add one, and only one card provider can be active at a time. If your business can't get Shopify Payments because of what you sell, Shopify says standalone Stripe isn't an alternative.
The Stripe Tax app for Shopify
- How it works
- Stripe's app in the Shopify App Store. You install it, confirm your Stripe account, and Stripe Tax imports your Shopify sales each day so tax limits, reports and filing cover both.
- Good for
- Businesses that file sales tax with Stripe Tax and also sell on Shopify.
- Where it breaks
- It is for tax only. It doesn't move payments or payouts. Stripe says orders with more than 100 lines aren't supported, orders before March 1, 2025 can't be imported, and tax registrations have to be added in both places by hand.
A Zapier zap
- How it works
- Zapier lists Shopify triggers like New Paid Order and New Refund, and Stripe actions like Create Customer and Create Invoice. It works the other way too: a new Stripe charge can create an order in Shopify.
- Good for
- Sellers who want a copy of each buyer or order in the other program.
- Where it breaks
- It copies records. It doesn't make two sets of payouts agree. Each case, like a partial refund or a dispute, is another step you build and keep up.
Arkeo agents
- How it works
- Agents read your Shopify orders, refunds and payouts and your Stripe payments, refunds and payouts, put them in one report, and check each payout against the sales inside it.
- Good for
- Businesses that sell through both and want one set of numbers each week, without two exports.
- Where it breaks
- Anything your rules keep for a person, like a payout that doesn't match or a dispute to answer, goes to your team in one message.
How to connect a Stripe account to Shopify: the steps
Short steps, in our words. Each one links to Shopify's or Stripe's own page for the screens.
- 1
Check what works in your countryShopify's payment gateways page has a location filter. If Shopify Payments is listed for your country, Stripe won't show in your admin. Use Shopify Payments.
- 2
Turn on two-step sign-inShopify Payments needs two-step authentication on your Shopify account before you can set it up. Check your bank account and business details meet your country's rules.
- 3
Supported country: activate Shopify PaymentsIn your Shopify admin, go to Settings, then Payments. Activate Shopify Payments and finish the account setup with your business and bank details.
- 4
Other countries: add Stripe as a providerIn Settings, then Payments, go to the Payment providers section and add a provider. Find Stripe, enter your Stripe sign-in, click Activate, then Save.
- 5
Selling through Stripe too? Add Stripe TaxIf you file tax with Stripe Tax, install the Stripe Tax app from the Shopify App Store. Stripe says to test it in a sandbox first, then connect your real account.
Where a Stripe Shopify connection stops
For most businesses with both, the work in the middle is adding up two accounts. Shopify Payments and your own Stripe account are separate. A Shopify staff reply in its community told a business with a web app on Stripe that it can't use its Stripe account in Shopify, and that charges through two checkouts show in two separate admins. That means two payout schedules, two fee reports, two refund lists and two customer lists. Each month someone exports both, matches each payout to the bank, and builds one revenue number by hand.
The same buyer is two people. A customer who buys in your Shopify store and pays a Stripe invoice has a record in each, and nothing links them. In Shopify's community, merchants keep asking to link the two accounts and see all purchase data in one place. The answer from Shopify staff has been no.
Country rules decide your options, not you. Shopify says that if Shopify Payments is supported where you are based, Stripe can't be activated, and if your business can't get Shopify Payments, standalone Stripe isn't offered as a way around it. Where Stripe is allowed, Shopify adds its third-party transaction fees, and only one card provider can be on at a time.
And the tax link has its own gaps. Stripe says its Shopify app skips orders with more than 100 lines, doesn't copy tax registrations, and adds an order edit as a separate transaction at the next sync.

Questions
Is my customers' information safe?
Yes. Agents work in your own Stripe and Shopify and see only what their job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.
Can I use my existing Stripe account with Shopify?
Only if your business is based in a country where Shopify Payments isn't supported and Stripe is. Shopify's help says that where Shopify Payments is supported, Stripe won't be available to activate. In those countries you use Shopify Payments, and your Stripe account stays separate.
Why can't I find Stripe in my Shopify payment providers?
Because Shopify Payments is supported where your business is located. Shopify says Stripe works behind Shopify Payments, so it doesn't offer Stripe on its own in those countries. Turning off Shopify Payments doesn't make Stripe appear.
Is Shopify Payments the same as Stripe?
Stripe works behind Shopify Payments, but it is not your Stripe account. Your payments, fees and payouts show in your Shopify admin, and you can't connect them to a Stripe account you already have.
What does it cost?
You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
