Chargebee runs the billing. Stripe takes the payment.

ChargebeeStripe
The short answer

Chargebee vs Stripe is not quite a straight swap. Stripe Billing is subscription billing built into Stripe's own payments. Chargebee is a billing system that sits on top of a payment provider, and Stripe is one of the 40+ it connects to. Use Stripe Billing when you want billing and payments in one place. Use Chargebee when you need more than one payment provider, quotes for bigger deals, or billing that finance runs without engineers. Where both stop: when a card fails and the retries run out, neither one calls the customer, and refunds made in Stripe don't show up in Chargebee on their own. Someone still follows up failed cards, quiet trials and renewals, and that is the work agents take on.

Chargebee vs Stripe Billing: what each one is

Stripe Billing is part of Stripe. You make products and prices, start subscriptions and send invoices from the Stripe Dashboard, with no code if you want. Stripe takes the payment itself. Its Billing page lists more than 15 pricing models, plus Smart Retries for failed cards, automatic card updates, and a customer portal where people manage their own plan.

Chargebee is a billing system that doesn't take payments itself. You connect a payment provider, like Stripe, under Settings, then Configure Chargebee, then Payment Gateways. Chargebee's own docs put it simply: Stripe processes each charge, and Chargebee handles subscriptions, invoicing, failed payment follow-up and matching. Chargebee says it connects to more than 40 payment providers and 50 ways to pay, in over 100 currencies.

Using Chargebee with Stripe

Many companies use both. Stripe takes the card, the bank debit or the wallet payment. Chargebee runs the plans, the invoices and the renewals on top. Chargebee's docs list cards, bank debits and wallets like Apple Pay and Google Pay, all through one Stripe account.

This setup makes sense when billing has gotten bigger than one payment provider. A company that sells in many countries may want a second provider for some markets. A sales team closing larger deals may need quotes and contracts that turn into subscriptions. Chargebee is built for those cases. If neither one fits you, Stripe Billing on its own is less to set up and look after.

How to tell which one you need

Ask three questions. Do you need more than one payment provider now, or soon? Do your deals need quotes, custom terms or contracts? And does finance want to change plans and prices without waiting on engineers? If all three answers are no, Stripe Billing is the simpler place to start. If one or more is yes, Chargebee on top of Stripe is worth a look.

What Chargebee and Stripe leave for your team to handle

Both products bill on time and retry failed cards. Their own docs show where the work comes back to a person.

Failed cards end in a status, not a call. Stripe's docs say that once a subscription invoice stays unpaid, Stripe pauses further tries to collect, and your settings move the subscription to canceled or unpaid, or leave it past due. A past due status doesn't promise another try. Someone has to reach the customer before the account goes.

Refunds made in Stripe don't reach Chargebee. Chargebee's refunds page says refunds made outside Chargebee, like in Stripe's dashboard, are not recorded in Chargebee on their own. Your team records each one by hand with Record Refund. Chargebee says the same of payments captured in Stripe: they have to be logged in Chargebee by hand.

Two systems can both email the customer. Chargebee's Stripe setup page says to turn off Stripe's direct debit emails if Chargebee sends them, or customers get two of each.

Payment problems still land on you. Stripe has a 1.6 rating from more than 17,500 reviews on Trustpilot. Trustpilot's summary of recent reviews says many are about accounts being limited and payouts held without a clear reason, with slow answers from support. Chargebee's page is smaller, with 112 reviews and a 3.1 rating, and its recent low reviews are mostly about slow support and cancelling a contract.

And neither one does the person to person part: a note to a trial that went quiet, or making sure the account owner knows a renewal is coming, with the payment history and any open invoices in hand.

The agents that work your billing

Each agent does one job from start to finish in your own Chargebee or Stripe: it follows up failed cards the same day, nudges quiet trials before they end, and gets renewals in front of the account owner. Your team hears only what needs a person.

Questions

Is my customers' information safe?

Yes. Agents work in your own Chargebee and Stripe and see only what each job needs. Customer details never go into public AI. Agents connect to AI through business-grade connections audited under SOC 2.

Does Chargebee use Stripe?

It can. Stripe is one of the payment providers you connect in Chargebee. Stripe takes each payment, and Chargebee runs the subscriptions and invoices.

Is Chargebee better than Stripe Billing?

It depends on your setup. Stripe Billing keeps billing and payments in one place. Chargebee is built for companies with more than one payment provider, quotes and contracts, or finance teams that run billing themselves.

Can I move from Stripe Billing to Chargebee?

Stripe can stay as your payment provider, connected in Chargebee, so customers still pay through Stripe. Moving the plans and subscriptions themselves is a project, so plan it with your billing and finance teams first.

Do refunds made in Stripe show up in Chargebee?

Not on their own. Chargebee's docs say refunds made in Stripe's dashboard are not recorded in Chargebee. Record them in Chargebee with Record Refund, or make refunds from Chargebee in the first place.

What does it cost?

You get the price on the call, along with the hours it saves your team.
